As we have just begun the journey into the New year , It’s time to see this as an opportunity to start fresh for New Health ,  New Wellness and a New You .

We at Lotus Wellness Rehab believe “ There is no Health without Mental Health “. As you take your time and effort to jot down your priorities for 2024, we felt like putting together 10 best pieces of advice by mental health experts around the world.

Mental health is being talked about openly all over the world. People are coming out of their closets and discussing their struggles with their mental health Openly.

Even celebrities are openly talking about their struggles with depression, stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues. This is creating a more inclusive atmosphere. People are not shying away from coming forward to discuss this with family and friends. People are making mental health a priority thus taking therapies and treatment. This is a positive change as compared to the previous years.

STEPS TO IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH IN 2024

Schools are recruiting School counsellors, child mental health experts, and special educators to give children the benefit of mental health in their growing-up years. Corporates are coming up with EAP Employment Assistant Programs to provide a safe and secure environment and support their mental health. Many corporate offices are organizing programs through life coaches, mental health experts, and emotional wellness experts intending to help their employees navigate through their hard times, to help them deal with their stress, anxiety, depression, other mental health issues thus increasing their overall performance and productivity.

Nowadays people are more conscious about their overall well-being and have started making mental health a priority. We all experience a jolt in our lives that takes a toll on our mental well-being. This might stay in your life for a brief period while impacting your physical and emotional well-being, casting its shadow on relationships in your personal and professional life.

As we embark on a journey towards the New Year, Mental health experts all over the world Have something to say in this regard.

1. CONNECT WITH OTHERS FOR MENTAL HEALTH :

We are busy with our professional commitments and other things so much that we hardly pay attention to the relationships that are losing their sheen due to lack of time on our end. This new year, resolve to take a break from our preoccupied lives and connect with near and dear ones. Spend quality time with friends and family. Building strong connections can boost your mood and provide a support system.

2. MINDFUL MOMENTS :

It’s high time we take a pause and focus on the present moment. Experts warn of this behavior as this might lead to burnout sooner or later. Practice mindfulness daily. Take a few minutes to breathe deeply and focus on the present moment. It helps reduce stress and increases self-awareness. Take a break for a few minutes from the hustle and bustle of life and just breathe in and breathe out mindfully, just bask in the moment to relax, only to bounce back after that.

3. SET REALISTIC GOALS :

We all wish to be high achievers in life. We set big goals, and run on the runway to achieve them. And if we fail, then we all are aware of the after-effects.

Psychologists warn about this behaviour as this might lead to heartbreak, unnecessary stress, anxiety, and depression. Psychologists suggest setting realistic achievable goals. Break down big goals into smaller, achievable steps. Make an action plan, to navigate yourself to the pathway. Have a backup plan too if something bombs. And finally, celebrate your progress, no matter how small, to maintain motivation.

4. DIGITAL DETOX FOR GOOD MENTAL HEALTH :

Technology has taken over our lives. I feel sometimes, it has overpowered our mind and body. Mobile phone addiction and screen addiction are the latest addictions that are equally damaging our mental well-being, according to what the experts say. That’s why, let’s take a break from our screen times. Schedule regular breaks from screens, and reduce the usage only to minimal, and that too when necessary. Mute all the notifications, and remove all the social media and other unnecessary apps. Have some no screen time or no phone time.

Fix a particular time for social media and other unproductive work with the phone or your devices to improve your productivity and time management. Unplugging can improve sleep, reduce eye strain, and foster a healthier work-life balance.

5. MOVE YOUR BODY :

We all want to fit in that exercise routine on our to-do list every day. But our busy schedules don’t permit us to spend that extra hour. Don’t worry. Not a yoga person? Don’t have time to go to the gym? Not to worry! Just incorporate a simple walk of 20 mins for 3 to 4 times a day at different intervals. Use our legs to walk rather than using a vehicle to cover short distances. You can incorporate physical activity into your routine in multiple ways. It doesn’t have to be intense – a simple walk or stretching can do wonders for your mental well-being.

6. EXPRESS YOURSELF CREATIVELY :

We just tend to fake our emotions and tell ourselves that everything is okay, even in the worst times. We mask ourselves and bottle up our emotions which leads to an emotional outburst over some time. This is more damaging. Hence find healthy getaways for your emotions. Find creative outlets for self-expression. Whether through art, writing, or music, expressing yourself can be therapeutic. Writing a diary, painting, gardening, cooking cycling or just anything will help you to express yourself in a better way leading to a healthy life.

7. LIMIT NEWS CONSUMPTION FOR GOOD MENTAL HEALTH :

It’s the social media age and the latest news is all over. Every second all the media channels are flooded with information, which we might need or might be of no use to us. Some are relevant some are irrelevant. Learn to filter the news that is required or adds any value to your life. Other than that, consider other news as trash. Stay informed, but be mindful of the news intake. Excessive exposure to negative information can impact mental health.

8. GRATITUDE JOURNAL :

We are so much obsessed with others’ lives that we forget to look at what nature or all mighty has bestowed upon us. It can be as simple as having a stomach full 3 meals per day. Many are not so blessed. Having an understanding spouse, healthy children, a house to call your own, and a supportive family. If nothing matches with this, then say thank you every day to yourself for just being there for yourself.

Practice gratitude, and learn to say thank you to people around you to add value to your life however small it could be. Each day, jot down a few things you’re grateful for. Focusing on positive aspects can shift your mindset and promote a sense of contentment.

9. SLEEP WELL FOR GOOD MENTAL HEALTH :

This hybrid economy has changed the way we worked for so many years. We tend to wake up late in the night, either busy with international client meetings or glued to our screens doing nothing. This has disrupted the whole sleep cycle. As per research a chunk of the population around the world is experiencing sleep disorders and the numbers will cross the mark in the coming years. This is a red flag situation indeed for humanity.

Prioritize good sleep hygiene. Sleep deprivation leads to various metabolic issues, digestive issues, and mood disorders and impacts overall productivity. Disturbed sleep impacts our overall well-being. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to support your overall well-being.

10. SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP :

This year, pledge to come out of your comfort zone and speak up openly about your mental health struggles. Many times, support from family and friends cannot help, as the issues might be quite deep-rooted. Here comes the help of a professional. Don’t shy away from seeking professional help. If you’re struggling, don’t hesitate to reach out to a mental health professional. They can provide guidance and support tailored to your needs.
