Mother Nature and Holistic Healing

This is a subject I get a bit philosophical about. My mind and heart often turns to it, as you would probably notice when you start reading my various content; it pops up a lot. And this is the idea that Mother Nature will provide. Anything and everything we could possibly need, She provides. To me, this is the god that we should be worshiping, honoring. Our planet, our home, birthed us. As Alan Watts explains, just as an apple tree apples (grows apples), the earth peoples (grows people). It’s such an incredibly long and detailed story of our creation and evolution. I can see how many people place the term “miracle” on it. It truly is!

The reason I believe it’s so important to understand this, to truly let it sink in, is to realize that everything that we need to survive and thrive can be found right here, on our planet. The earth, all the animals and vegetation, have all co-evolved with us. It’s no accident that we can live off everything that’s here. If we don’t allow anything to adulterate what Mother has provided, we can’t help but live long, healthy, and happy lives. She’ll never lead us astray.

When our modern-day way of eating and living began to expand, we began to become more and more sick. There are observational studies ad nauseum showing that as soon as a native group of people who have lived by the ways of nature for thousands of years becomes modernized, they then become sick and begin to have higher morbidity and mortality rates. This is the pattern, seen repeatedly. I believe this is due to the speed of living. The quicker our lives become and the less time we take for the important things, the more predisposed we become to live an unbalanced life.

Nature is all about balance, seasons, and time. Our bodies and minds work best when we stay in alignment with nature.
It seems that our modern way of living has resulted in a lower food quality, much more stress, and a lot less physical activity. I’m not saying that we have to become homesteaders and grow everything we eat to achieve true wellness, but we must strive to stay aligned with the natural ways of life.

I’ve found many ways to stay connected to nature while living a busy life with work and family. It does take some effort and a little skill, but it’s well worth it. And these are the very things I love helping others get better at. Eating a meal made with unprocessed ingredients prepared from scratch is much different than some fast food we can pick up on the way home from work.

Here are a few examples of how we’ve deviated from Mother Nature’s way. She gives us fruit and grains for energy, and we make sugar and white flour from them which wreak havoc on our bodies. All the vitamins and nutrients we need to thrive are found in whole foods, yet much of that is lost in vitamin supplements which we tend to believe is better for us. Much of our technology and modern schedules throw off our circadian rhythms which is so important for brain and body repair. I believe that the proper balance is achieved through a holistic approach. This approach considers all aspects of our lives.

I believe there are three pillars, or components, that allow us to achieve that balance.

1. Fuel the body. This is eating for fuel and nourishment rather than for constant pleasure.

2. Move the body. We must be physically active daily for proper function.

3. Calm the mind. This allows us to properly manage the stress and strain of life. I’ve been thinking about these three core pillars for a long time.

This is what We share in all programs at Lotus Wellness. My question to anyone wanting to improve their health and wellness is “how are you addressing these three pillars? I truly believe that having this balance allows us to find true healing and optimal health.

Here are some general ways to start your balanced and natural path to wellness.

1. Get back to nature, literally and figuratively. Being in nature gives me such a calming effect and helps me see the simplicity of life.

2. Keep your foods as natural and minimally processed as possible. My other blogs would go into more details about this.

3. Get closely involved with your food. Get dirty. Prepare it. Learn where it comes from. Keep it as local as possible.

4. Find proper balance using the three core pillars. I understand that life can be very busy and demanding, but I believe that if we slow down and observe, we’ll discover that Mother Nature will provide everything we could possibly need and want.
